유재신 박사는 토론토 대학교 한국학을 선도한 교수이다. 강의실에서는 존경받는 교육자로서 수많은 후진을 양성하였고, 뛰어난 학자로서 한국 사상과 문화 분야에서 괄목할 업적을 남겼다. 특히 토론토 대학교에 한국학을 설립하기 위한 기금을 조성하는 데에 핵심적인 역할을 하였다. 토론토 대학교의 많은 학생들은 유재신 박사의 강의를 통해 한국사와 한국 문화를 처음으로 접할 수 있었다. 생전 끊임없는 집필활동을 이어온 유재신 박사는 한국의 사상 뿐만 아니라 동양의 광범위한 사상과 한국 문화의 기원에 대해 20여권의 영문 및 국문 저서를 남겼다. 오늘날 토론토 대학교 한국학의 발전은 유재신 박사의 헌신과 공로에 크게 기인한 바, 그 뜻을 기려 토론토 대학교에서 한국학을 공부하는 대학원생들을 후원하기 위해 본 장학금을 조성하였다.
The Dr. Chai-Shin Yu Memorial Scholarship in Korean Studies will be awarded to a graduate student in East Asian Studies based on academic merit, financial need and whose research focuses on Korean Studies.
Dr. Chai-Shin Yu was a leading figure in the founding of Korean Studies at the University of Toronto. As a distinguished scholar and educator in Korean thought and culture, his influence reached far beyond the classroom. He played a crucial role as a fundraiser, securing essential resources that made the establishment of Korean Studies possible. Dr. Yu is fondly remembered by many students who were introduced to Korean history and culture through his courses. As a prolific scholar, he authored 17 books in English and 3 in Korean, exploring Korean and Asian thought and the origins of Korean culture. Thanks to Dr. Yu’s dedicated efforts, the study of Korean language and culture is now thriving at the University of Toronto. This scholarship aims to build upon his rich legacy by supporting current graduate students in the field of Korean Studies.
