Every person who ever crossed the path of Dr. Chai-Shin Yu has been saddened by his recent passing. He was a pioneering scholar, an enthusiastic teacher, and a valued colleague whose many contributions to the Department of East Asian Studies laid the foundation for Korean Studies at the University of Toronto. To honor his legacy, we are establishing a scholarship in his name and invite you to join us in supporting this initiative.
As you may know, Dr. Yu’s vision and dedication were instrumental in introducing Korean Studies to Canada. In 1977, he initiated a conversation with Professor John Brownlee, the Chair of East Asian Studies, about Korea’s growing international prominence and its historical cultural richness, quietly but insistently advocating for the study of Korea. At that time, the EAS Department consisted only of Chinese and Japanese Studies, with no funds for expansion, but Dr. Yu was able to mobilize the Korean community in Toronto and secure funding for the first course on Korea offered at any Canadian university. It was titled Introduction to Korean Civilization and was taught by Dr. Yu himself. Through his organizational skills and reputation, he then went on to found the Foundation of Support for Korean Studies in the Toronto Korean community. In subsequent years, this group led the fundraising efforts that greatly expanded Korean-related courses at the University of Toronto.
Today, Korean Studies at the University of Toronto thrives as a comprehensive program with a full range of courses equivalent to those in Chinese and Japanese Studies. Dr. Yu’s own scholarly works—spanning Korean religion, thought, and culture—include seminal books and other studies on Buddhism, Christianity, Shamanism, and many other aspects of Korean civilization. As an enthusiastic teacher, he inspired countless students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with his passion and commitment.
On a more personal note, my own friendship with Chai-Shin spanned almost forty years, and I have many memories of long lunches and longer conversations with him. He introduced me to the admirable traditional culture of Korea, and I remember well my first experience of its music, dance, and painting at a Festival of Korean Culture he helped organize on campus in 1979 or thereabouts. I had never before seen ladies wearing the traditional hanbok costume, and the evening remains so clearly in my memory because they made the room magical with so much color and beauty!
And lastly, I cannot resist sharing an anecdote about Chai-Shin which still makes me smile.
I once had occasion to translate a difficult passage from Korea’s earliest history book, the Samguk Sagi. I went to Chai-Shin for help and he explained it. But the next day, as I was leaving (a little late) to teach a class, he appeared at my office door, excited, saying he had more information about the passage, and proceeded to talk, hardly noticing that I was on my way to class. It was a cold January day, but he followed me all the way across campus without coat or gloves. On our arrival at the classroom, he was shivering and there was snow on his shoulders, but I think he was satisfied that he had taught me a little more about Korean Buddhism!
It is fair to say, in conclusion, that Dr. Yu’s tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on the academic community at the University of Toronto. By contributing to this scholarship fund, you will help preserve his legacy and support future generations of students pursuing Korean Studies. Together, we can ensure that his memory lives on through education and scholarship.

많은 분들이 아시다시피, 유 교수님의 비전과 헌신은 캐나다에서 한국학을 소개하는 데 핵심적인 역할을 했습니다. 1977년, 당시 동아시아학과장이던 John Brownlee 교수와 만나 세계적으로 중요성이 커지고 있는 한국의 역사와 문화를 소개하며 조용하지만 확고하게 한국학의 필요성을 제안하셨습니다. 당시 학과에는 중국학과 일본학만 있었고 신규 과정을 위한 예산도 부족했지만, 유 교수님은 토론토 한인 커뮤니티의 힘을 모아 첫 한국 관련 강좌인 “한국 문명 입문”을 개설하였습니다. 이 강의는 유 교수님 본인이 직접 강의하셨습니다. 이후 그의 조직력과 명망을 바탕으로, 토론토 한인사회 내에 ‘한국학 후원 재단(Foundation of Support for Korean Studies)’을 설립하셨고, 이 단체는 이후 토론토대학교의 한국 관련 강좌 확장을 위한 주요 재정적 지원을 이끌었습니다.
오늘날 토론토대학교의 한국학은 중국학, 일본학과 대등한 수준의 폭넓은 과정을 제공하는 탄탄한 프로그램으로 성장하였습니다. 유 교수님은 불교, 기독교, 샤머니즘 등 한국 사상과 문화를 주제로 한 중요한 저서들을 집필하셨으며, 그 학문적 기여는 한국학의 기초를 다지는 데 큰 역할을 했습니다. 그는 열정적인 교육자로서 수많은 학부생과 대학원생들에게 영감을 주며 깊은 감동을 남기셨습니다.
개인적인 이야기로, 저에게는 유 교수님과의 40년 가까운 우정이 있습니다. 함께 점심을 먹으며 나눈 긴 대화들은 지금도 생생합니다. 특히 1979년 무렵, 유 교수님이 주최한 한국 문화 축제를 통해 처음으로 한국의 전통 음악과 춤, 회화를 접했던 기억이 떠오릅니다. 한복을 곱게 차려입은 여성들이 만들어낸 아름답고 화려한 분위기는 지금도 제 기억에 깊이 남아 있습니다.
그리고 마지막으로, 미소 지어지는 일화를 하나 나누고 싶습니다.
한 번은 제가 『삼국사기』의 어려운 구절을 번역해야 했을 때, 유 교수님께 도움을 요청드렸습니다. 그는 친절히 설명해주셨지만, 다음 날 수업 시간 직전에 제 사무실에 다시 찾아오셔서 그 구절에 대한 추가 설명을 해주셨습니다. 당시 저는 이미 늦어서 급히 수업에 가는 중이었지만, 그는 외투나 장갑도 없이 한겨울 추위 속에서 캠퍼스를 함께 걸으며 설명을 이어가셨습니다. 강의실에 도착했을 때 그는 눈이 쌓이고 떨고 있었지만, 그날도 저에게 한국 불교에 대해 한 걸음 더 깊이 가르쳐주신 것을 매우 기뻐하셨습니다.
결론적으로, 유재신 교수님의 끊임없는 노력은 토론토대학교 학문 공동체에 지울 수 없는 흔적을 남겼습니다. 이 장학기금에 동참함으로써, 여러분은 그의 뜻을 이어가는 데 기여하시고, 앞으로 한국학을 공부할 학생들을 지원하실 수 있습니다. 교육과 장학을 통해 그의 기억이 오래도록 이어질 수 있기를 바랍니다.
