제가 유재신 교수님을 처음 뵌 것은 1977년 12월, Korean University Students’ Association (KUSA) 의 성탄절 파티에서였습니다. 그날 교수님께서는 우리 청년들에게 캐나다 주류사회로 적극 진출하라는 진심 어린 격려의 말씀을 전해주셨습니다. 당시 토론토대학교에서 한국 문화사를 강의하고 계시다는 말씀을 듣고 깊은 관심을 가졌지만, 아쉽게도 이후에는 따로 만나 뵐 기회가 없었습니다.

다음 해인 1978년, 제가 한인대학생협회 회장으로 선출되었을 때 교수님을 다시 찾아뵈었습니다. 당시 저는 토론토대학교의 학생들과 교수진에게 우리 문화를 소개하고 싶은 열망이 있었지만, 그 방법을 몰라 막막해하고 있었습니다. 제 고민을 들으신 교수님께서는 진심으로 기뻐하시며, 흔쾌히 도움의 손길을 내밀어 주셨습니다. 교수님께서는 동양학부로부터 5천 달러의 지원금을 마련해 주셨고, UN 초청으로 뉴욕에서 공연 예정이던 장두이 씨와 아이리스 박 씨를 연결해 주셔서, 봉산탈춤과 양주별산대놀이 등 한국 전통 공연이 이루어질 수 있도록 도와주셨습니다.

이니스 칼리지 타운홀에서 열린 그 행사는 가야금 연주와 고전무용 등 다채로운 공연이 펼쳐진, 캐나다 대학 내 최초의 한국 문화 소개 행사였습니다. 행사에 참석한 토론토대학교 John Brownlee동양학부장님은 처음에는 한국 문화가 중국이나 일본과 별반 다르지 않을 거라 생각하셨지만, 공연을 통해 우리 문화의 독특함과 우수성을 직접 확인하시고, 9월을 ‘한국의 달’로 지정하는 계기를 마련해 주셨습니다. 이어서 로버트 중앙도서관에는 고려청자, 거북선, 금속활자 등이 전시되었고, 이는 한국어 과정과 한국학 프로그램이 시작되는 중요한 출발점이 되었습니다.

유 교수님께서는 이민 초창기 목회자로서 캐나다 한인사회를 위해 헌신하셨고, 특히 1.5세와 2세 청년들이 주류사회에 적극 진출해 크게 성장해야 한다는 신념을 늘 강조하셨습니다. 그 이듬해에는 교수님께서 직접 학생들을 인솔하여, 그분이 존경하시던 미국 코네티컷 주립대학교의 고광림 박사와 전혜성 박사 부부를 만나게 해주셨고, 미국 전역에서 열린 차세대 컨퍼런스에도 참여할 기회를 마련해 주셨습니다.

저 또한 이 경험을 통해 교수님께서 설립하신 The Society of Korean Studies and Related Studies에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 당시 약학을 전공하던 저는 교수님의 영향으로 종교학이라는 새로운 학문적 여정에 들어서게 되었습니다. 교수님은 제게 깊은 정신적 지도를 해주신 분이셨습니다.

유재신 교수님은 한국학 후원재단을 설립하시고, 캐나다에서 한국학이 뿌리내릴 수 있도록 초석을 다지신, 우리 동포사회의 진정한 거인이셨습니다. 만약 지금 교수님이 살아 계신다면, 한인 2세들을 위해 열정을 다하셨던 그 여름 캠프의 강의를 다시 한 번 청하고 싶습니다. 캐나다의 차세대가 큰 꿈을 품고 세계적인 인물로 성장하기를 바라시던 교수님의 따뜻한 미소가 아직도 선명히 기억납니다.

저는 현재 김대중 재단 토론토 지회장을 맡아 차세대 노벨상 수상자를 발굴하고, 우리 동포 자녀들이 더욱 큰 꿈을 펼칠 수 있도록 격려하고 있습니다. 이 모든 여정 속에서 저는 늘 유 교수님의 환한 미소를 떠올리며 다시금 그 뜻을 이어가고자 노력하고 있습니다.

I first met Professor Chai-Shin Yu at the Korean University Students’ Association (KUSA) Christmas party in December 1977. He passionately encouraged us, young Korean Canadians, to actively engage with Canadian society. At the time, he was teaching Korean cultural history at the University of Toronto, which deeply impressed me.

The following year, as president of KUSA, I approached him again with a desire to introduce Korean culture to the broader university community. Professor Yu wholeheartedly supported the idea. He secured $5,000 in funding from the Department of East Asian Studies and connected us with traditional Korean performers, including Jang Du-Yi and Iris Park, who were scheduled to perform at the UN in New York. With his help, we organized the first major Korean cultural event at a Canadian university, featuring performances such as Bongsan Talchum, Gayageum music, and classical dance at Innis College Town Hall.

This landmark event inspired John Brownlee, the Chair of East Asian Studies department to designate September as “Korea Month” and marked the beginning of Korean language and Korean Studies programs at U of T. It also led to the exhibition of Korean artifacts at Robarts Library, including celadon pottery, the turtle ship, and metal movable type.

Professor Yu was not only a pioneer of Korean Studies in Canada but also a devoted mentor to Korean immigrants and youth. He emphasized the importance of 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean Canadians becoming leaders in mainstream society. He even personally introduced us to renowned Korean scholars in the U.S., such as Dr. Hae Sung Chun and Dr. Kwang-Lim Ko at the University of Connecticut and encouraged our participation in next-generation leadership conferences.

Through his guidance, I became involved in The Society of Korean Studies and Related Studies and shifted my academic path from pharmacy to religious studies.

Professor Yu laid the foundation for Korean Studies in Canada and devoted his life to empowering our community. If he were with us today, I would ask him once again to lead summer lectures for our youth. His warm smile and unwavering belief in our potential continue to inspire me.

Today, as the Chair of the Kim Dae-Jung Foundation (Toronto Chapter), I remain committed to encouraging the next generation to dream big—just as Professor Chai-Shin Yu hoped we would.
